When I started networking on Orkut I was very happy because it offered me my privacy and at the same time I was able to connect with different people. So when my friend asked me to join Facebook I was not too sure. I asked myself “should I create a facebook account”? I opened one reluctantly but was soon disillusioned by my decision to do so. I found out that Facebook was not as secure as Orkut. Secondly every second month there is news about your details on Facebook going public. According to me a good networking site should always respect the privacy of its users which is not the case with Facebook. So when my friends and relatives ask me which networking site I use on a daily basis I promptly reply to them that it’s Orkut.
I received an email the other day that struck me as rather strange. The email subject stated I had won $1 million dollars from Facebook. I wondered when facebook started giving away money. The sender showed to be facebook uk office. Now I have received email from Facebook before and it always says Facebook that is all. Curious as to what was up I made sure my virus scanner was active and opened the email. The contents were actually quite humorous. It was obviously a scam, and not a very well written one. This is what the email had to say: “Dear person who opened this, I be writing to let you know I found you won money. You need to be contacted with me if you want your money. Send me all your information and I send you a check. Simple as that. Thank you, the man with the money.” I had to laugh to myself. It seems like everyday there is another email scam that pops up. Evidently they work quite well as they are more and more widespread. They work well enough that the perpetrators of the scam don’t even try to make things look legitimate any more. Now don’t get me wrong, I know Facebook is a global network. I am sure that there is probably some sort of branch office in the UK. But, please, give me a little credit for spotting your pitiful scam attempt.
